Macalaster College | St. Paul, MN
The Challenge
Macalester College was looking to improve the energy efficiency and occupant comfort of Olin Rice Science Center, where aging single-pane glass was contributing to heat loss and uncomfortable classroom conditions. A traditional window replacement approach would have required extensive demolition, replacement of the existing framing system, and increased disruption to campus operations. The college needed a solution that could improve building performance, support its sustainability goals, and maximize the value of the existing window infrastructure.
Our Solution
Brin determined the existing window frames were in good condition and developed a glass-only retrofit solution using LuxWall Enthermal™ Transparent Insulation. With an R-value of up to R-18, Enthermal™ delivers the thermal performance of a wall in the form of glass using patented vacuum technology. A pilot installation and thermal imaging demonstrated a dramatic improvement in thermal performance, allowing Macalester’s facilities team to see and feel the benefits firsthand and gain confidence in a solution that reduced energy loss, improved occupant comfort, and minimized disruption to campus operations.
Results Accomplished
The completed retrofit dramatically improved the windows’ thermal resistance, reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer—key factors in lowering energy costs and improving tenant comfort. By avoiding a full window replacement and preserving the existing framing system, Macalester was able to achieve more than $160,000 in cost savings while minimizing disruption to campus activities. The successful mock-up and installation demonstrated the effectiveness of LuxWall’s Enthermal™ Transparent Insulation and helped advance the college’s long-term energy reduction and sustainability initiatives.
Why was Brin Glass best suited for the work?
As LuxWall’s Value-Added Reseller in Minnesota, the Brin family of companies was uniquely positioned to bring this innovative glazing technology to Macalester College. The team evaluated existing conditions, developed a customized retrofit approach, and leveraged extensive glazing expertise to improve performance while preserving the original framing system. Through a consultative process, pilot testing, and seamless project execution, Brin delivered a cost effective solution that gave Macalester confidence in adopting a new energy-efficient technology.
